The congressional elections will result in a remarkable turnover of incumbents, due to several factors. Many congressmen have lost their share of votes, and redistricting will also influence the vote. Over 1,000 non-incumbents have filed their intention to run for seats in the House.

Article Abstract:
A total of 24 incumbents lost their congressional seats, and the 1992 elections leave 259 Democrats and 175 Republicans in the House. Beleaguered Democrats such as House speaker Tom Foley retained their seats. Congressional newcomers include 47 women and 38 African Americans.

Voters re-elected Pres Clinton but did not give control of the House to Democrats. Republicans were heartened and energized by their huge upset in the 1994 midterm elections. Voters indicated their desire to see few changes in the balance of power.
