Time to make a profit: with the recession coming to an end, practices should start to think seriously about profitable people, as well as profitable projects
Article Abstract:
Getting work in was a priority for architects during the years of the recession, but it is important to make a practice reasonably profitable through workload planning. An architectural project manager must ensure that the agreed professional services are delivered in time and within budget, but some practices lose money spending time on unrelated efforts and work. The project can be broken down into a series of tasks defined as no less than one day or more than 10 days in duration, capable of being completed without interruption and with clearly defined start and end points.

Architects who open the books
Article Abstract:
A small number of architectural practices are sharing financial information. Edward Cullinan Architects invited three other practices to meet with them to compare facts and figures. The group found great similarities between their expenditure problems and decided to jointly oppose the new Conditions of Engagement of the ACA Survey of Fees paid to architects. The experience of the group suggests that co-operative action is beneficial and openness a good way to tackle the recession.

Constructing change
Article Abstract:
Reform centered on increased training, implementation of stricter environmental standards and a higher level of health and safety within the UK construction industry is expected if recommendations made to the government are acted upon. Two major reports on the industry have been produced in 1994 and 1998, both stressing the importance of a stricter code of practice which is aimed at producing a high level of service for customers of the construction industry.
