Timid hearings
Article Abstract:
The European parliament of the European Union has interrogated new commissioners for three hours each. Most of the new commissioners were well-prepared and there were a number of questions about human rights, food safety, and environmental issues. The different commissioners hold different views on the European Union's preparations for enlargement and this contrast was especially striking on the issue of majority voting. The commissioners are likely to be approved by the European parliament.

Mikulas Zurinda, Slovakia's turn for the better
Article Abstract:
Slovakia has a better chance of joining the European Union (EU) following the election of Mikulas Dzurinda as prime minister in 1998. Former prime minister, Vladimir Meciar, was seen as bad for Slovakia's international reputation. Meciar still has influence in Slovakia, and could make a political recovery. Dzurinda has to tackle the problem of economic restructuring, which is likely to lead to a rise in unemployment, so improved relations with the EU are important to Dzurinda.
