China bashing
Article Abstract:
Republicans in the U.S. Senate have managed to bring anti-Chinese issues to the fore as a means of damaging the image of President Clinton. The Republicans hope to maintain their slim majority in the November elections and China is an ideal way to do this because it has a poor record on abortion, religious freedom and it is also gaining military strength. The House has asked President Clinton to reconsider a planned visit to China and it has called for a ban on satellite technology being sent to China. Other anti-Chinese amendments are planned for forthcoming bills.

Merchants in uniform
Article Abstract:
A number of leading Indonesian companies have foundations controlled by the armed forces as their main shareholders. These companies play a key role in maintaining the country's military strength, especially as they make profits which can be used to meet the armed forces' nonbudgetary expenses. Some observers are expressing reservations about the involvement of the armed forces in Indonesia's business life, especially as some important weakness in the armed forces' business strategy have come to light.
