Sparring partners
Article Abstract:
There were indications of closer relations being established between China and the US during President Bill Clinton's visit to China. However, there are still certain areas of tension between the two countries. China is aware that it needs to cooperate with the US in order to create an environment in which domestic economic reform can be undertaken, and both countries have acknowledged that their interests are converging in many ways. However, China remains unwilling to compromise on Taiwan, and this could prove a barrier to warmer relations with the US.

Article Abstract:
Hungtington's thesis that the potential clash between China and the West is based on the universality claims of civilizations seems to be a weak reference point in explaining his rally to other Western nations to support the US in weakening China's bid for superpower status.
