Tobacco in Italy
Article Abstract:
Italy had sales of 92.3 million kilogrammes of tobacco in 1998, up 2% from the previous year. Cigarettes accounted for 98.5% of sales, out of a total market of 21,353 billion Italian Lira. The industry, which is state run, by Ente Tabacchi Italini (ETI), is about to be privatized. ETI makes cigarettes under licence and distributes products from overseas in partnership with manufacturers such as British American Tobacco, RJR and Philip Morris, and also looks after the production and marketing of Italian tobacco and tobacco-based products.
