Too good to be true
Article Abstract:
Sweden is facing significant economic and political challenges. Its economy, once one of the strongest in the world, is declining, and a number of well-known Swedish companies are not performing well. It is clear that the country's welfare spending must be reduced, but the coalition government, headed by the Social Democrats, seems unwilling to take firm action on this issue. The government has made a commitment to provide more welfare, but has not released many details about how this will be financed. The coalition is weak, and the Social Democrats can no longer rely on the support of large companies.

When grey is good
Article Abstract:
The European Commission has supported a ban by the European Court of Justice on parallel imports of branded goods into the European Union (EU). Mark-ups in Europe are higher than is warranted by transportation costs, taxes and the like, so profits can be made from importing from America. Discount retailers, importers and consumer groups oppose the ban. Manufacturers argue that brands can be damaged by parallel imports, but they should not be allowed to prevent goods from being resold. Non-EU countries may allege discrimination. Supermarkets are ignoring the ban, which could be overturned.

Grey new year
Article Abstract:
Romania continues to face significant economic difficulties. Gross domestic product declined by 6.6% in 1997, and probably declined by a further 6% in 1998. In 1999, the country must pay back $2.8 billion to foreign creditors, but official statistics indicate that its foreign currency reserves are only $1.85 billion. The International Monetary Fund is set to resume negotiations for a rescue programme on Jan 25, 1999. This will involve Romania reducing the losses of state-owned companies by 30%.
