The list ranks the 50 largest insurers in the world by assets as determined by Dow Jones Indexes. AXA-UAP of France is the largest insurer in the world, with assets totaling US$407,930 million as of Dec. 31, 1997. Nippon Life of Japan ranks second in the list, with assets totaling US$323,297 million as of Dec. 31, 1997. Allianz of Germany places third in the list, with assets totaling US$293,686 million as of Dec. 31, 1997. The list also shows capital and net income. The list is part of a report by the Wall Street Journal Europe.
