California Dreaming'? Gallo tries to sell its wine in France
Article Abstract:
E & J Gallo Winery's (Modesto, CA) Nicholas Reynier believes wholeheartedly in Gallo's wine. He left his sales job as a prestigious Bordeaux wine broker six months ago to sell Gallo's wine to the French, in Bordeaux, France. Reynier is wooing the French to sell Gallo's preminum varieties. The going is slow in Bordeaux for Gallo's 16-member team. The company has gained some early successes, however, currently selling approximately 200,000, 12-bottle cases a year in France and several major French fine-wine chains and supermarkets, along with approximately 20 Parisian restaurants carry Gallo's wine. Gallo has a deliberate strategy of highlighting its California roots, which the French consider exotic, and not the US, which can be a turn-off, but despite this, Gallo still is sensitive to French sensibilities to avoid offending them.
