Transferred to Tokyo - a guide to etiquette in the land of the rising sun
Article Abstract:
Western business executives transferred to Japan must be made aware that verbal and non-verbal communication presents a formidable cultural barrier to productive relationships. The Japanese language poses a major problem in inter-cultural relations in that, unlike low-context languages like English in which words convey the majority of meaning, meaning in Japanese depends on the context of the situation, which can lead to many misunderstandings. There are courses currently available to familiarize Western managers with Japan. The Japanese approach to business differs from the Western in many respects, including: Japanese are more team-oriented, are less independent, and do not typically ask questions or challenge those they disagree with. Guidelines for Western businesspeople working in Japan include learning some Japanese, engaging a Japanese assistant fluent in both languages, and reading books about contemporary Japan.
