The UK travel and tourism industry is dominated by Thomson Tour Operators which accounted for 26% of market share in 1997, although Thomson accounted for 30% of the market in 1993. Airtours accounted for 18% of the market share in 1997, increased from 15% in 1993. The leading travel agent is Lunn Poly, which took 22.5% of the UK travel market by volume in 1997. Going Places accounted for 14% of the volume market in 1997. Airtours and Thomson Holidays spent almost 6 million pounds sterling on advertising in 1996.
