Traveller's tales
Article Abstract:
The killing of demonstrators in Ratchadamnoen Avenue by government troops on May 18, 1992 led many Thais to take a good look at themselves as a people. The relative peace brought about by economic prosperity made them believe that their country will not succumb to violence. Having shaken an important self-concept of the Thais, the massacre has become the focal point of heated debates regarding the demonstrators and the military. Meanwhile, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, anxious to prop up Thailand's peaceful image abroad, has begun announcing that the country will be normal in a very short while.

Graft busters
Article Abstract:
The UN Development Programme's planned international body to monitor and expose cases of corruption may not be the most effective way to stop corruption. While Honesty International could expose and provide evidence against corrupt officials and businessmen, it would also be disabled by limitations. Honesty International would have neither police powers nor indemnity from defamation suits. The team also cannot expect much cooperation when conducting investigations. The UN should instead turn its efforts toward helping revamp corrupt, biased or ineffective justice systems.

On the head of a pin
Article Abstract:
Finance One is the largest finance company in Thailand. The company's president, Pin Chakkapah, is spearheading an expansion drive that is expected to fortify its already strong position in the country's financial markets. Finance One, which exhibited rapid growth in the last five years, recently took over Thananant Finance and Securities, increasing the company's assets to $1.5 billion. However, observers are worried about the possible effects of a slowdown in the growth of the Thai economy on the company.
