Trucks to trains
Article Abstract:
Coffee planting spread in Brazil in the 19th century thanks to railroads, which allowed coffee to be transported to ports. Railroads underwent a decline in the 20th century, but they have started to recover market share from roads, and uncultivated fertile land could be used in Brazil if the railroads provided transportation. Labor productivity is low, despite job shedding, and road transportation benefits from subsidized diesel fuel. Logistics firms are enterng the Brazilian market, which should help the railroads.
