Trying Cambodia's butchers
Article Abstract:
The United Nations recommends that former leaders of the Khmer Rouge should be tried in an international court, but the government of Cambodia favors a national court. The Cambodian prime minister, Hun Sen, argues that the guerilla war could start again if the leaders are sent abroad, and he favors a truth commission, following the South African model. There is a need for justice in Cambodia, and ordinary people could threaten the stability of the country if justice is not achieved.

Article Abstract:
There is tension in the capital cities of Indonesia, Cambodia and Myanmar. Students have protested in Jakarta, Indonesia, and elsewhere in the country. Meanwhile, demonstrators in Cambodia allege vote-rigging, though foreign observers see the poll of Jul 1998 as having been fair, on the whole. Violence has occurred in Cambodia and Indonesia, but this is less of a problem in Myanmar. Election results of 1990 were not honored by the regime, and a confrontation could occur.
