Turbulent priests
Article Abstract:
English bishops are starting to show an interest in devolution, though the ruling Labor party appears to have lost interest in English regional devolution. Bishop of Durham, Michael Turnbull, is to be chair of a constitutional convention for the north east of England. Bishops are involved in the community and are politically neutral, so they are good candidates for this role. The prime minister, Tony Blair, can control which bishops are appointed, and whether they should be elected to the House of Lords if they behave in ways that he does not like.
