Turkey, flattened and in shock
Article Abstract:
Turkey has been hit by an earthquake centered in Izmit, and also felt in Ankara, Turkey's capital. As many as 10,000 victims were still buried two days following the quake. The Turkish authorities claim that the high number of victims is partly due to the area being densely populated, but the poor quality of building work which led to modern apartments collapsing was also responsible. Many older buildings were undamaged. Some apartment blocks may have been built by companies awarded contracts by municipal officials on the basis of cronyism.

Back in fashion
Article Abstract:
The idea of a new town has become popular again in England, and proposals for new towns respond to an increase in demand for new homes. The government aims for 60% of the new homes to be constructed on brownfield sites but this allows for 40% in rural areas on greenfield sites. New towns tend to depend too much on motor vehicles and lack focal points. The expansion of existing town is difficult due to opposition from inhabitants. One proposal is to build a town on a disused airfield, which helps to avoid using a greenfield site.
