Turks and Bulgars make up
Article Abstract:
Relations between Bulgaria and Turkey have improved and relations between the prime ministers of the two countries are cordial. There are from 700,000 and 1 million ethnic Turks in Bulgaria and there were attempts at forced assimilation, followed by expulsion, in the communist era. An apology by President Peter Stoyanov for Bulagria's behavior toward its Turks helped improve relations between the two countries in 1997. There are economic benefits for Turkey in improved relations with Bulgaria, especially since Bulgaria may be the first of the two to join the European Union.

Unwinnable: Turkey and the Kurds
Article Abstract:
Hardliners in the Turkish government claim to have nearly defeated the Kurdish separatist movement in their country. Although support for the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) has faded, the fact that Turkey is not even giving Kurds a modicum of autonomy will assure that uprisings will continue.
