UBS is considering buying LTCB's share of joint ventures

UBS AG, a financial-services company based in Switzerland, is considering buying Long-Term Credit Bank of Japan's (LTCB) share of joint ventures, according to a source. UBS is also developing plans to take over LTCB's half of a jointly-owned investment-banking tie-up and an asset management venture. The reported buyout of UBS comes at a time when the Japanese bank is hounded by severe financial problems. LTCB is also holding negotiations with Sumitumo Trust & Banking Co. to merge their respective operations .

Directors prepare to give first nod to BCI, Intesa Union

Banca Intesa SpA and Banca Commerciale Italiana SpA's (BCI) board of directors will conduct separate meetings on June 30, 1999 in order to give the preliminary approval to a proposed merger. BCI's board of directors gave their approval the merger of the two banks on June 17, 1999. The merger would form the largest bank in Italy. The merged entity would have assets valued at 266 billion euros.
