UBS top adviser as UK market remains buoyant

It is expected that the growth in merger and acquisition (M&A) activity in the U.K. will continue. Figures for the first quarter of 1996 show that 18 public sector transactions were completed during the period, with a total value of 5.7 billion pounds sterling. The largest deal during the quarter was Forte's acquisition by Granada Group PLC. Leading adviser was UBS, taking part in five deals, together valued at 4.4 billion pounds sterling.

Lazards fends off US onslaught

The league table of financial advisers on European cross-border deals shows that US banks continue to dominate the industry, occupying six of the top ten positions in 1996. Lazard Houses was top of the table in 1996, with 46 deals valued at 12 billion pounds sterling. Among its transactions was the hostile bid by BET for Rentokil. The performance of UK banks was generally successful during the year.

Acquiring a taste for Europe
Article Abstract:
UK companies purchased 105 companies in continental Europe in the first half of 1995, with deals worth a total of 2.8 billion pounds sterling. There was particular activity in the food and drink industry, where there were eight deals totalling 597.6 million pounds sterling. There were 20 deals in the business services sector, but the total value of these deals was only 68.4 million pounds sterling.
