UK: VCTS ATTRACT INVESTORS FOR TAX BENEFITS
Article Abstract:
Venture capital trusts (VCTs) could realise GB[pound] 500m in 2000, a 66% rise on 1999. As more investors become aware of the tax advantages they offer, VCTs look set for rapid growth, with 80% more subscribers than in 1999. Sixteen new VCTs are due for release before the end of the year. The tax benefits which make VCTs so attractive include a large saving on Capital Gains Tax, which can be deferred by reinvesting any gains from a VCT within a year. Investors also only pay the tax for the original VCT when it is sold. Research director for the Tax Shelter, Martin Churchill, advises VCTs are most suited to investors who have experience of equities.

UK: INVESTORS IN TECHNOLOGY FUNDS WAIT FOR RECOVERY
Article Abstract:
People who invested in technology funds when their shares were at their highest price cannot expect to get their money back within three years from February 2001, according to an Aberdeen Technology fund manager, Ben Rogoff. The share value of technology funds declined by around 30% between end March 2000 and end January 2001. Investors have lost 45%-50% according to the head of research at Hargreaves Lansdown, independent financial adviser, Mark Dampier, so it is inadvisable to sell now, but it could be advisable to buy.

UK: FULL-YEAR FALL FOR UNIT TRUSTS AND OEICS
Article Abstract:
UK-based unit trusts and Oeics experienced their first full-year fall since 1994 with a 3.29% fall in 2000 due in part to the slump in technology stocks and problems in the Far East markets. The UK All Companies sector fell by 4.85%. The only UK sector to report positive returns was equity income which rose 2.27%. With an unsure economic climate in the US and Japan, 2001 could prove to be another difficult year according to Steve Lipper, marketing director of Lipper.
