US Navy selects replacement UAV system
Article Abstract:
Northrop Grumman Corp has won a $93.7 million contract to supply its Vertical Take-off and Landing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (VTUAV) to the US Navy and Marine Corps. The company will be working with Lockheed Martin Federal Systems, Owego, and Schweizer Aircraft Corp on the project. The company's winning VTUAV system is a Schweizer 330SP helicopter that has been modified for autonomous operation.

Article Abstract:
The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is moving from just a sensor platform to more sophisticated roles in reconaissance and surveillance. Some UAVs are being equipped with other payloads such as electronic- warfare suites and communications-relay packages. The transition from purely sensor platforms to weapons carriers offers long-term advantages such as elimination of human factors and lower acquisition and maintenace costs.
