U.S. monitors Chinese military and is sanguine
Article Abstract:
US Joint Chiefs of Staff William A. Owens claims that the Chinese military has not yet acquired the capability to extend its force beyond its borders. Owens further says that the US is not worried over China's increased defense budget. China has been criticized earlier for its explicit show of military power when it built an outpost on Mischief Reef, a part of the Spratly Islands claimed by the Philippines and when it conducted missile tests near Taiwan. In the face of such impending threats, Owens has reassured continued US presence in Asia.

Lingering doubts over politics keep foreign investors away from Jakarta
Article Abstract:
Foreign investors remain wary of Indonesia's stock market after a Jul. 27, 1996 riot in Jakarta rocked the business sector. Despite economic conditions that favor investments such as a 7% annual economic growth, slow inflation and attractive valuations, foreign investments remain low. The riot stemmed from the forced eviction of opposition leader Megawati Sukarnoputri's supporters from their headquarters.
