US pursues comprehensive mortar improvements
Article Abstract:
The US military is developing or studying several comprehensive improvements to mortar systems and sub-systems that could radically transform the weapon's use on the battlefield. The US Army's XM935 120mm Precision Guided Mortar Munition (PGMM) is scheduled to enter the engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) phase in Fiscal Year (FY) 2002. The US Marine Corps is also considering using PGMM with the Dragon Fire remotely operated mortar and/or for the service's projected Mobile Dragon vehicle-mounted variant. For potential development after PGMM, the Armament Research, Development, and Engineering Center (ARDEC) is evaluating an XM984 Extended Range Mortar Cartridge (ERMC), bearing Dual Purpose Improved Conventional Munition subminition or other payloads.

MISER permits engagements from confined spaces
Article Abstract:
Benet Laboratories is touting its Minimum Signature Envelope Recoilles (MISER) weapon as an effective armament in urban warfare. The company is hoping that MISER would be considered by the US Army and Marine Corps as part of an advanced technology extension of the current MOUT (military operations in urban terrain) advanced concept technology demonstration. The Marines is requiring an enhanced version of the Shoulder-launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon (SMAW) for MOUT missions. MISER's basic version, an 81mm-caliber propulsion unit, can be fired from a standard SMAW launcher either as a mortar or in direct-fire mode.
