Uncompetitive deals
Article Abstract:
South Korean word-processing vendor Hangul & Computer (Hancom) has decided not to go ahead with a deal under which it would have received investment of $20 million from Microsoft in exchange for ceasing production of its Hangul word-processing software. This follows an offer of investment by the Korean Venture Business Association. This investment is considerably less than that offered by Microsoft, so Hancom will have to make substantial efforts to improve its product. The deal with the association highlights how difficult it will be for market mechanisms to become established in South Korea.

Article Abstract:
Progress is being made towards addressing the year 2000 computer date change in Hong Kong, with more than 50% of the government's computer systems either being ready for 2000 or being replaced. Some 90% of banking institutions and 70% of insurance companies will resolve year 2000 computer date change problems by the end of 1998. However, the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission is making companies aware of the need to draw up contingency plans in case unexpected problems emerge.
