Article Abstract:
According to the Austrian consumer organisation VKI, premiums for accident insurance in Austria amount to about Sch 6.5bn annually. Meanwhile, claims settled by insurers amount to no more than Sch 3.7bn annually. According to VKI, about 75% of the 600,000 or so accidents taking place in Austria each year take place during leisure and are thus not covered by accident insurance. This applies to about 50% of lethal accidents. The organisation also points out that premium rates differ considerably. For family accident policies with more or less identical cover it discovered a price range from Sch 2,784 to more than Sch 5,000. J rg Finsinger, professor of financial services and the Economics University of Vienna, estimates that the introduction of the euro will lead to a 20-30% fall in accident insurance premiums in Austria.

Austria: Turnover tax reform criticised
Article Abstract:
The reform of the turnover tax planned by Austria's finance minister, Karl-Heinz Grasser, has been criticised for creating bureaucracy and loopholes. The reform, which is due to become law in 2003, requires an exact notification of business partners and the type of business being transacted, and it is said that it would be possible for companies to avoid paying tax on goods which are bought for their own use. The reform would require a two-tier system for trade within Austria and international trade, as the EU would continue to use the current system. The reform also requires the EU Commission's special permission, as the rules for turnover tax are laid down in the EU regulations.
