Article Abstract:

Vieques, a Caribbean island, is used for training puposes by the US Navy, and there is opposition from local people. There have been three reports commisioned into accidents and measures tho solve the problem, and the first report argued that land should be given back to islanders. The navy then argued that it did not have an alternative training site. There is a high level of unemployment in the island, and critics argue that there would be more space for expansion if land was given up by the military.

Article Abstract:

Unusual weather conditions in the West have made it especially fire prone in summer 1996. The 1996 fire season caused more damage than any since since 1969. Suppression of fires due to human development may cause the fires to be larger and more dangerous in the future.

Article Abstract:

Several revamped manufacturing industries, such as steel, are booming in such midwestern states as Ohio, Illinois and Indiana. The employment rate is up, as are exports, and a labor shortage is occurring in some areas. Fears of recession are discussed.
