Volkswagen (VW) AG still expected strong exports would help profit to increase this year, despite worries about weakness in Germany and in Latin America. The car manufacturer also said that second-quarter pretax profit increased according to expectations, rising 17% from the year before to Euro805 million.

The commercial vehicle unit of Volkswagen AG reported a 18% decline in its pretax profits for 1998. However, the unit expressed more optimism for the next few years. In the first two months of 1999, deliveries have fallen. In 1998, the unit posted 459 million marks ($255.5 million). In 1997, it posted 559 million marks in profits. The unit's sales increased by 9.3% to 8.3 billion marks.
