Vibration, curing and striking
Article Abstract:
Concrete is vibrated to ensure good compaction but care must be taken not to over-vibrate it. Concrete should be evenly placed and vibrated internally when possible. Vibration will cause some variation in colour. Curing is largely a matter for engineers but architects should be aware of the time necessary for curing before and after striking. Early striking may dammage the surface of some concrete mixes while delayed striking may cause discolouration. Formwork should be struck with care to minimise surface dammage and satisfactory surfaces should be sealed promptly.

Underneath the arches
Article Abstract:
Construction of the new terminal for trains using the Channel Tunnel at Waterloo station, London, England involves making use of the space underneath the existing railway platforms. These are built on brick arches with some 25,000 sq meters of space beneath. The age of the arches and previous alterations has made waterproofing and repair work necessary to turn the arches into useful space. Shotcrete is the main material for repairs and waterproofing as it can accommodate movement and complements the bricks.

A theatre is reborn underneath the arches
Article Abstract:
The Green Room Theatre, Manchester, England, is housed in two railway arches and was founded in 1987. The theatre appointed architect Ian Simpson Architects to remodel the two arches to provide increased audience capacity, a meeting room, offices, and rehearsal studio space. The main challenge was in determining the entrance to the building. An entrance was constructed in each arch, with the internal architecture reflecting the existing structure of the arches.
