A good intention is not enough
Article Abstract:
Cetos (Hostivar, Czech Republic), machine tool manufacturer, expects proceeds of over 400 mil Kc in 1998. The firm's proceeds amounted to 240 mil Kc in 1997 compared to 96 mil Kc in 1996. Exports represent 70% of the firm's proceeds. Cetos expects an unspecified profit in 1998, having seen high losses in 1996 and 1997. Reasons for the losses were the liquidation of useless goods on stock, writing off unrecoverable receivables and a slow increase in the productivity of labour. Cetos was set up from the former state company TOS Hostivar (Hostivar, Czech Republic) in March 1996. Having gone into bankruptcy proceedsing, TOS Hostivar was bought by the foreign trade textile company Centrotex (Prague, Czech Republic). Centrotex has big problems with the extension of its activities, in spite of the growing economic results of Cetos.

Reliable tool replacement policy for quality and cost
Article Abstract:
A tool management model was formulated to assist management engineers in handling off-line tool management applications. The model utilizes a quadratic loss function to illustrate the costs resulting from differences in part dimension and target value. It also utilizes the tool reliability function to illustrate the likelihood of tool failure. The best tool replacement policy offers several advantages, including product quality improvement, lower production costs, less machine downtime and improvement in process control.
