Waging war on waste
Article Abstract:
Waste management is a top priority for the European Commission and the member nations of the European Community. The Commission has already passed 41 directives and is expected to come up with more. Recycling of rubbish is actively being promoted all across Europe as an alternative to traditional methods of disposing garbage, such as burning and landfills. Industrial organizations have also started to become conscious of the need for environmental management policies and have initiated efforts to recycle rubbish and cut unnecessary waste in industrial processes. This new level of environmental consciousness is expected to have a negative effect on certain sectors of industry, including raw materials producers, and manufacturers of disposable packaging and packaging made of composite materials, which are difficult to recycle. Environmental legislation is expected to benefit recycling firms and makers of reusable containers and easily recyclable packaging.

Russia: how the East is won
Article Abstract:
Russia's turbulent political climate is having a devastating effect on its economy. Efforts of Pres Boris Yeltsin and then-prime minister Yegor Gaidar to transform Russia from a centrally planned to a market economy has resulted in increased unemployment, decreased productivity and soaring inflation. The government is pushing ahead with its privatization initiative despite criticisms of its economic program, although under a more conservative new prime minister, Viktor Chernomyrdin. There are quite a number of foreign investors who are exploring the opportunities the newly democratized country is offering, but many are still reluctant to participate in the privatization program. Case studies of the Moscow Aerostar hotel and Russian firms experiencing competitive bidding illustrate the many problems that foreign entrepreneurs may encounter when doing business in Russia.

John and the whale
Article Abstract:
Inter-Continental Hotels Corp CEO John van Praag discusses his management of the luxury hotel group and his plans for its expansion. Van Praag's involvement with Inter-Continental began in 1988 when he coordinated the complex acquisition deal that resulted in its $2.3 billion buyout by Saison Corp, a Japanese travel and retail conglomerate, and its subsequent sale of a 40% stake to SAS International Hotels. He was appointed CEO in 1990 and has overseen an increase in the hotel group's operating profits to around $120 million. Van Praag notes that the group's heavy debt load continues to cause net losses, but remains optimistic about continued growth in the 1990s. Expansion plans include 11 new hotels, with 29 others under negotiation.
