Waiting for Wahid
Article Abstract:
General Wiranto has refused to leave the Indonesian government, though he has been dismissed by President Abdurrahman Wahid. Wiranto was made political and security affairs minister, and was implicated in violence in East Timor. Wiranto denies the allegations and argues that if he leaves it may appear that he is guilty. Wahid looks set to win over the longer term, though he has been criticized on a number of counts, such as for spending a lot of time abroad. Wahid needs the armed forces to back him, though the balance is moving toward civilian rule.

Wahid's big test
Article Abstract:
The Indonesian president, Abdurrahman Wahid, has fired General Wiranto from government following revealtions of his involvement in East Timor atrocities, and Wiranto has refused to leave. This has become a key issue in Indonesian politics, and failure to impose his authority means that confidence in Wahid and the Indonesian economic recovery will be undermined. There will continue to be a threat from the Indonesian military, even if Wiranto leaves.
