Waiting for the first health PFI deal
Article Abstract:
There is still considerable uncertainty about the prospects for the UK government's Private Finance Initiative (PFI) in the health sector. Health trusts have been permitted since 1994 to fund hospital building privately, but no final contracts have yet been signed. Problems have arisen because consortia are dealing with individual health trusts, which are separate legal entities, rather than with government counterparties. However, there are now signs of progress, with Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust having signed a deal with a consortium led by Tarmac.
