Logging onto Asia; global giants take on the region's PC makers
Article Abstract:
Asian manufacturers of computers and computer components already have a large share of the global market, but they hope to dominate it as it shifts to their region. Western PC makers are fighting to keep market share in ways their predecessors, the consumer-electronics companies of two decades ago, did not. The Asian companies have not developed brand-name recognition in their own backyard, but they have the advantages of low labor costs and manufacturing and assembly plants already scattered through the region.

Goodbye, Mr. Chips
Article Abstract:
Japan's assembly lines are turning away from automation in favor of the flexibility, intelligence, and lower start-up costs of human workers. A long economic slump, high exchange rates, and demand for customized production are all factors, though maintenance costs and the floor space needed for robots are also important. Manufacturers now seek simpler machines to do heavy lifting, while reorganizing workers into organic teams. Robot-makers hope simpler models and non-automated industries leave room for growth.

That's not all, folks: Asia gets serious about drawing cartoons
Article Abstract:
Cartoon animation has become big business in Asia, where many studios do production work for US companies as well as a growing number of their own projects. Animation subcontracted overseas halves production costs, which make up 35% of the $500,000 cost for a half-hour tv episode. Asian studios face several problems, including labor strife and cultural differences that make it hard to represent Western commonplaces. Feature-length productions such as 'The Lion King' are still done in the US.
