Ritual, ritual manuals, and the crisis of the Confucian world: an interpretation of 'Rulin waishi'
Article Abstract:
''Rulin waishi' ('The Unofficial History of the Scholars'), an 18th-century Chinese literati novel by Wu Jingzi, can be viewed in relation to contemporary intellectual discourse on Confucian ritual. The novel's narrative approach represents a significant development in critical reflection on intellectual trends. The novel portrays a Confucian ritualized world, while also calling that vision into question and resisting any clear-cut conclusion. The description of a Confucian ceremony in Chapter 37 draws on Confucian ritual manuals.

Waxworks
Article Abstract:
A research team at Cornell University headed by physicist Eberhard Bodenschatz is using molten wax to model the motion of tectonic plates. The researchers hope to be able to replicate the way these plates cool and solidify. It has been possible to reproduce a number of similarities with real ocean floors. Increasing the speed at which the wax is pulled apart has been found to produce a ridge like the fast-spreading East-Pacific Rise.
