Weak sales in December stir call for U.K. rate cut

Holiday sales gains for UK retailers were the lowest in three years, according to a report by the British Retail Consortium. The report prompted a push for a reduction in the interest rate to bolster consumer spending; the rate is currently at 5.5%. Sales declined to 2.3% compared to 2006.

Japan spending growth fails to cheer analysts
Article Abstract:
Consumer spending in Japan increased 2.2% in December 2007, besting the 0.2% drop predicted by economists. However, analysts believe the report is not likely to alter forecasts that domestic demand will drop.
