We'd like to cancel: unions sink plan to privatize Calcutta's famed hotel
Article Abstract:
Union opposition forced India's West Bengal government to drop its plan for privatizing Calcutta's legendary Great Eastern Hotel, sending discouraging signals to would-be overseas investors. The Marxist-led coalition government wanted to create a partnership with France's Accor, selling half the shares to the public. It would have spent $30 million renovating and expanding the hotel, letting go the current union staff. However, fearing loss of union support could cost it an upcoming election, the government changed its mind.

Paper tigers: India's privatisation effort stumbles along
Article Abstract:
India's budget reform in February may be a commendable move but the government's privatization program is hardly moving even when Narasimha Rao considered it the priority step in his administration'seconomic liberalism restructuring program started in Jul 1991. As a result, many people are doubting the government's sincerety and criticizing the policies. Some think that the bureaucrats are to blame because they don't want their present vested interests to be jeoperdized.

Back in charge: India's reforms entice foreign firms to raise their profile
Article Abstract:
Foreign companies have been increasing their investment in India since Aug 1991 when the government stopped limiting foreign ownership of India-based companies to 40%. Many foreign multinationals, mostly producers of consumer-products such as Gillette and Procter & Gamble, have increased their profiles by enlarging old associations rather than establishing new ones. Permission to use foreign brand-names has augmented the influx of foreign companies into India.
