Welcome to the mudbath
Article Abstract:
The contest for Senate in New York involves two candidates, Charles Schumer, Democrat, and Al D'Amato, Republican, who have a similar position in opinion polls, which sometimes show a slight lead for Schumer. Both men have moved toward the political center using a populist approach. Both are skilled in raising funds, doing deals, and adopting causes as their own. Schumer needs a large turnout from New York city Democrats if he is to win. Both candidates are remorseless and they may possess the qualities needed by New York.

A boxer on the ropes
Article Abstract:
Barbara Boxer, incumbent Democrat, and Matt Fong, Republican, are campaigning for Senate in California. Opinion polls initially showed Boxer with a lead, but this has since disappeared, with Fong taking the lead in another poll. Boxer could be affected by her links with President Bill Clinton, and the scandal that he is involved in. She is also seen as a liberal crusader, and pragmatists are tending to receive more support from Californian voters. Fong could benefit from Asian support and from his pragmatism.
