West cashes in on Russian TV
Article Abstract:
Alpha TV has been introduced into the Russian market as the first electronic media company in the region that is 50%-owned by media investment company StoryFirst Communications of the US. StoryFirst CEO Peter Gerwe indicated that Alpha TV wants to funnel $100 million into the new CTC Russian network for programming for the coming five years. But Kommersant, a top publisher in Russia, is interested in selling 75% of Alpha TV to other investors, with plans of a public offering within a year's time. Alpha TV plans to set up radio stations, magazines, and newspapers in addition to its three existing stations and pop channel MuzTV.

Murdoch eyes Moscow

News Corp's Rupert Murdoch and LogoVAZ group's Boris Berezovsky are likely to create a joint sales house to manage Moscow, Russia's national station TV-6 and public broadcaster ORT. LogoVAZ holds interest in the two stations. The negotiations have spurred speculation that Murdoch aims to acquire as much as 20% stake in ORT. In 1997, News Corp and LogoVAZ created Logovaz News Corp, a joint venture that operates Nashe Radio, an FM radio station in Moscow.

Atomic explosion

Atomic, a 24-hour TV channel, is the first Romanian-language channel that is geared toward an audience aged between 15 and 25 years old. The channel, which is supported by the American-owned Atomic Media Group, is distributed free through cable to about 60 major cities. Atomic, which has earned favorable responses from its target audience, features concerts, competitions, extreme sports, domestic and foreign videos, fashion and interviews.
