What a standard guarantees
Article Abstract:
Specifiers are bound to select products that are adequate for their use and must ensure the verification of specialist information from other sources. Failures can be made when specifiers rely on the results of suppliers' laboratory tests, do not take account of compatibility between products and use British Standards and Agrement certificates in broad terms only. Verification should include checking on-site performance, confirmation of manufacturers claims, checking the currency of certification and the terms of non-British tests. The manufacturer should log the verification process and specifications should place quality of workmanship under contractual control.

Product review (lighting) (Focus Products in Practice)
Article Abstract:
There is a fresh emphasis on exterior lighting, although many exterior lighting companies are focusing on amenity lighting or area illumination instead of architectural or landscape lighting. There is growth in the use of compact fluorescent lamps for exterior lighting which can be incorporated into modern and period lanterns. Changes in legislation have also affected the market such as the International Electrotechnical Comission IEC598-1 covering low voltage halogen luminaires, requiring them to be fitted with protective shields. Innovative interior lighting includes a simple light pipe to deliver natural light.

Product approvals and standards
Article Abstract:
The British Board of Agreement (BBA) provides technical approval for building products. It investigates the production process, tests the product and visits sites where it is in use to assess ease of use, durability and installation procedures. If the produce is approved, it is issued an agreement certificate and will be subject to further assessments to ensure consistency of quality and specification. The BBA works closely with its European counterparts and is designated to issue European Technical Approvals, a prerequisite of the Communaute Europeene (CE) mark.
