What is to be done with Modern masterpieces?
Article Abstract:
The Van Nelle factory in Rotterdam, Netherlands, which was constructed between 1925 and 1929, is currently standing empty. An informal government advisory group has been created to consider potential uses for the building, which has many features which were innovative for its time, including large glass curtainwalls. The main problems with finding alternative uses are that the building is extremely large, it is functionally organized and it is not close to the centre of the city. However, the Delft School of Architecture has expressed a desire to relocate there.

Modernist city dreams turn to nightmares
Article Abstract:
The modern city was the focus of a conference held in London, England. Most discussions focussed on the narrowly-defined modern city, rather than on more general concepts of modernism. Speakers generally agreed that the dominant process in modern city development is the desire for coherence. However, one speaker, Michael Sorkin, maintained that new processes in modern city development include a move away from zoning, and a move away from design based on adjacent architecture. Cities examined included Brasilia, Milan and the New Towns of Great Britain.
