Whatever it takes: Indonesia's revamped tin-miner seeks listing
Article Abstract:
State-run tin-mining company Tambang Timah of Indonesia looks fit after a three-year turnaround and hopes to branch out into other metals as well as to list publicly. Kuntoro Mangkusubroto slashed staff by 75% and cut operations ruthlessly before moving to the Ministry of Mines and Energy. Now Timah, which in 1994 had 20% of the world market in tin, plans to leverage its costs, which are the lowest in the world, and the rising value of tin to break into new metals with an yet to be selected joint-venture partner.

Pump primer: Indonesia mulls curbing monopoly of state oil firm
Article Abstract:
Indonesia is considering giving private companies more access to oil and gas operations now controlled by the state-run company Pertamina. Designed to create more oil refineries, the proposal could also modernize the nation's inadequate distribution system, including gas stations. Only 1500 now serve all Indonesia, each dispensing some four times what their Australian counterparts do, and some of those may be sold to developers. Current interest in new refineries seems aimed at links to major oil companies.

House of defections: party-hopping MPs cause confusion
Article Abstract:
Members of the Philippine House of Representatives are frequently switching from one political party to another, and some members are even failing to be clear about which party they support. These tendencies have thoroughly confused the Philippine political situation. Pres Fidel Ramos' Lakas-NUCD party won 41 seats in the May 1992 election but has been reported as having either 112 or 52 seats. Opposition parties' strengths are equally uncertain.
