Fires and heavy smoke have raged over forests in Borneo, Sumatra, and Indonesia, and there has been criticism about the lack of coordination in the firefighting effort while a poisonous smog blanketed the area. It is likely the fires will not be completely extinguished until the monsoon season.

Battle lines have formed between environmental activists who want to see waste incinerators abolished and workers who depend on them for their livelihood. The newly built incinerator in East Liverpool, Ohio will provide at least 100 new jobs to residents.

Free television time is an undemocratic way to provide equal opportunity to presidential candidates who cannot raise the funds for expensive advertising. Even more insidious would be a return to party elections of candidates behind closed doors.
