Article Abstract:
The snack food industry is divided into five major categories: salty snacks, sweet snacks, health snacks, beverages and all other snacks. Cookies are the biggest segment in the snack food category with total sales of C$534 million in 1998. Meanwhile, manufacturers' shipments of salty snacks posted an annual growth rate of 8.4% between 1988 and 1996. Cookies led the sales in terms of dollar volume in 1998, ahead of potato snacks, nutritious portable foods, corn snacks, snack cracker and soda crackers.
