There was economic uncertainty and anger in the US in the early part of 1996, but the improving economic news apparently has overcome this attitude and there seems to be a combination of satisfaction, apathy, and exhaustion in the country as the November election approaches.

Yale economist Ray Fair has developed a model in which the winner in the US presidential election can be forecast by examining economic statistics. In general it is very true that an incumbent president will either be reelected or defeated according to economic conditions.

The World Bank's annual 'World Development Report' concluded that an effective government is one of the keys to economic development. The report found that countries with high degrees of confidence in government also had high levels of economic growth and investment.
