Competition in the Philippines cell phone market has led to a drop in the price of handsets and services. Demand for cell phones has been boosted by a large backlog for fixed lines with potential customers facing delays of years. Cell phones are also seen as important business tools. Smart Communications has been a catalyst for change by aggressively competing at a time when the industry was being deregulated. Heavy investment will have to be carried out by cell phone operators due to the need to meet increased demand.

Storm brewing; Philippine beer barons fight proxy battle in Congress

Article Abstract:

The competition for market share between the two main beer companies in the Philippines has spilled over into the political arena. Asia Brewery, with 20% of the market, and San Miguel Corp, with 80% of the market, are both lobbying Congress for tax breaks. The tax bills being considered would give each company a clear advantage over the other. San Miguel Corp and Asia Brewery owner Lucio Tan both have enormous political clout which they are using against the government of President Fidel Ramos to win their cases.
