Article Abstract:
There has been a postponement of the deadline for power to be devolved to a new administration in Northern Ireland. The unionists insist that the Irish Republican Army (IRA) should start to disarm if Sinn Fein is to be permitted to form part of the new government, while the IRA refuses to do so. There is hope that a compromise can be reached such as a gradual disarmament carried out in stages. There is also hope that progress can be made through talks involving both sides.
