International diplomatic efforts are continuing in a bid to help forge an acceptable post-Taliban government in Afghanistan, but it is no easy task. There are disadvantages to both main candidates: the exiled former king, Zahir Shah, and Northern Alliance political leader Burhanuddin Rabbani.

The Taliban may have been ousted from Kabul, but Afghanistan remains at war and efforts to develop a stable post-Taliban regime will be long and hard. Much of Afghanistan is controlled by warlords, and bringing together the different groups in a broad-based government will not be easy.
