Quarrelling between Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Pres Ghulam Ishaq Khan has escalated to the point where the army has threatened to step in. Recently, Sharif supporters kidnapped the secretary of the Punjab assembly to try to reverse the seizure of power by Manzoor Watoo, a supporter of Ishaq Khan.

Pakistan is undergoing a fragile change from a dictatorship to democracy, following the ousting of prime minister Nawaz Sharif. A new constitution should be written that would reduce presidential powers and prevent subversion of the judiciary.
