Under Margaret Thatcher the Monopolies and Mergers Commission and other government agencies were directed to be very strict in determining whether an illegal monopoly was in place as a means of encouraging competition. Now there are charges the Commission is much too lax in its enforcement.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), or the Hindu-nationalist party, leads 19 Indian political parties in a coalition that received a narrow vote of confidence in March 1998. Despite some charges of religious extremism, the BJP is a modernizer that hopes to restore Hindu national pride.

The Institute of Public Policy Research reports that competitiveness has been damaged by the British government's failure to reform competition laws. The Monopolies and Mergers Commission has inadequately tried to lessen restraints on competition.
