Why Paddy will miss Peter most
Article Abstract:
The resignation of Peter Mandelson from the United Kingdom government could have a serious impact on the leader of the Liberal Democrats, Paddy Ashdown. Ashdown's fellow party members were less keen on an agreement for closer links with the Labor Party than was Ashdown himself. Mandelson favored such links more than did more tribalist members of the Labor Party, who will be strengthened by his departure. The Labor Party has a large majority so is less inclined to favor close links with the Lib Dems. This could change if Labor loses seats at an election, but Ashdown may not stay in his post for that long.

Red Ken and the grassy knoll
Article Abstract:
Ken Livingstone is the most popular candidate to be mayor of London, Emgland, but there are senior members of the Labor party who would prefer that he did not stand. It is dificult for the leadership to oppose him except on the grounds that he is honest about his opinions, and blocking his bid to be candidate would make the leadership appear to be unwilling to tolerate dissent. Livingstone is an able political performer, and a favorite among party activists in London, so the Labor party may have to allow him to be candidate.

Can Michael get a grip?
Article Abstract:
Alun Michael is a Welsh politician from the United Kingdom Labor party and a supporter of the leader of the party, prime minister, Tony Blair. There are some differences of opinion between the Welsh Labor Party and the leadership in England, and these divisions may hamper Michael's bid to head the Welsh assembly. Some Labor party members in Wales prefer Rhodri Morgan as an alternative candidate. Michael has to be elected leader and has to find a seat in Wales, and achieving both goals may be difficult.
